Leisure Precinct at Glades by Halcyon QLD

The Leisure Precinct creates a community hub for Halcyon’s over 50’s active lifestyle Glades project at Caboolture. Urban Country Music and travel through outback Australia became our design vision for the overall project. The first experience of this idea is at the site entry which contains an artscape known as “Dream On”. The artscape, and the artwall in the entry carpark, represent ideas about ancient geological strata, outback earth colours, long extinct volcanoes, the Southern Cross, Lake Eyre and deserts. The journey along the wide tree lined Kingfisher Boulevard leads to the leisure precinct which is the heart of the recreational activities.

To reinforce the overall project vision in the leisure precinct we drew on the idea of the “Longhouse”. At its heart, this concept is about social connection and a culture of community. The building houses spaces for a multitude of passive and active pastimes – a vibrant expansion of the individual’s own home. Its form also has its heritage in the shed vernacular, and a range of textural materials such as rammed earth, the expressed timber structure and the stone hearth are key features to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere. While some home owners are line dancing, others can be quietly reading a book, sitting with friends around the barbecue, or trying their arm in the theatre of the bowling green or pickleball courts. The surrounding herb gardens fill the precinct with a range of flavours and aromas. The connection between indoors and outdoors is enhanced through the filter of a verandah like terrace along the building with shady spots to relax.

These facilities support a wide range of community groups and activities as well as offer spaces where residents can welcome guests and connect with neighbours as an expansion of their own homes. This aligns with our vision as we seek to create better places for people to live filled with friendship and fun.
